Livingston Rossmoor
Traveler
from the book "Selected Sonnets"
Traveler, do you really have to go?
Can anything stop you from reaching your mark?
Not the warm fireplace, nor the impending snow,
can keep you from departing in the dark?
The nightfall scares you no more, you just
have to go? Your eyes flash with the urge to
take off. It is a long journey. But, this gust,
this cold, must you go? How can you get through?
Go, go, pilgrim, go, you are born to be
a traveler. Someday you may remember
the grey villager under the same old tree,
next to the rusted pot, by the fading ember.
Smoking pipes surround a tea pot.
Chill and silent night all over the cot.
